Mechanical thrombectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove blood clots, or thrombi, from blood vessels. This procedure is commonly used to treat patients experiencing ischemic strokes, which are caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain. During mechanical thrombectomy, a catheter is inserted into the blood vessel and guided to the location of the clot. A specialized device, such as a stent retriever or thrombectomy device, is then used to physically remove the clot and restore blood flow. This procedure is effective in reducing disability and improving outcomes for patients experiencing acute ischemic strokes.
